Is GoDaddy bad for SEO?

While watching Super Bowl there was a TV spot that while memorable didn't seem like that big of a deal at the time.  GoDaddy having decided to change things up this year had a woman (and apparently customer) quit her job on national television.  You may have seen this spot -

What is interesting, more than the spot itself, it the noteriety that the woman who quit her job is getting. She was featured on the Today show, and her interview is featured here. While the Today Show was more concerned about the reaction of her boss, I was wondering…"What does that kind of exposure translate to for your online presence"…

Well when I did a Google search for her website Puppets by Gwen here's what I got…

If you look at the listing you'll see that though the commercial spot and her interview are ranking on page 1, her website is not. (this is important to note that a video about your business can easily rank higher in searches than your website)

I did find her listed on page 2, but only her homepage and none of her subpages.

Now this was a search for "Puppets by Gwen" not a search for "Puppets, puppetry, how to make puppets, etc."

Now I can speculate about why her page isn't ranking as high as other posts about her story, but right now I just ask the question… How valid of a host and design team is GoDaddy if they aren't even getting their client to rank on page 1?

Making Your Marketing Move

When I was in college years ago, I had the opportunity to take some classes in Animation.  Now I say "opportunity," because I had hoped to take a different course of classes but had to settle that year for some other "related" classes.  What I didn't realize at the time was how valuable and enjoyable understanding the fundamentals of Animation would be.

Recently, we had the opportunity to animate some promotional images for the Olympia Film Festival and create a couple of promotional videos.  Check out the video, and then look below for some tips on things to consider when looking to create an animated video from 2D images.

Tips for 2D Aminated Videos -

1. Think of your materials in layers. Is there a background image, foreground image, and character image(s) that can be animated?

2. Sound sells the motion. Make sure to use music and sound effects to add reality to the motion.

3. Animation works on a scientific principal called persistence of vision. You are tricking the eye and the brain by moving objects just a small bit per frame, and letting your brain fill in the gaps. So like Ellie's dad says in Contact "Small moves".

4. HD video is created at 72dpi (dpi is a graphics term) and varies from 1280x720 to 1920x1080 frame size. You will need rather large images to move things around on an HD animated screen.

5. Don't feel like you are married to the constraints of the originally marketing piece. As long as you honor the style and theme of the print materials you should be able to create a creative video that your clients and viewers will enjoy.

Video Tips - Getting Good Audio

Online viewers will be forgiving of low quality video most of the time, but they expect good sound. Outside of a quite office, you really can't rely on the internal microphone on your camera to do the job.  When looking for a video camera, even a Flip style, look for one that allows you to use an external microphone.

If the option isn't there to plug in an external microphone, you can still use a separate inexpensive audio recorder and mic, and sync the two audio tracks together in post.  In a conference or seminar situation, place this mic on a podium or plug it into the house sound system to get clearer quality audio.

Always monitor your audio through headphones to make sure it is recording at the proper level, and there is no noise that you might not hear with the naked ear.
